NHTSA REAFFIRMS MODEL S 5-STAR SAFETY RATING IN ALL CATEGORIES FOR MODEL YEAR 2014

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reaffirmed the 5-star safety rating of the Tesla Model S overall and in all subcategories for Model Year 2014, confirming the highest safety rating in America. While Tesla is awaiting feedback from NHTSA regarding their investigation of recent fire incidents, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), recently concluded its review of the incidents, finding no manufacturer-related defects or need for further action.

Three Teams Awarded Share of $10 Million Purse in Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE for Super Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

WASHINGTON (September 16, 2010) – The X PRIZE Foundation, an educational nonprofit prize organization, and Progressive Insurance, the country’s fourth largest auto insurance group, today, at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., awarded $10 million to three teams who successfully completed the rigorous Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE. The winning teams—Edison2 of Lynchburg, Virginia; X-Tracer of Winterthur, Switzerland; and Li-ion Motors Corp. of Mooresville, North Carolina—emerged from an original field of 111 competing teams, representing 136 vehicle entries from around the world. The winning vehicles were showcased to an audience of auto industry, business and government leaders. Each of the winning teams was also presented with a towering bronze trophy designed by Harry Winston, Inc.

A123 Systems Opens the Largest Lithium Ion Automotive Battery Manufacturing Plant in North America

LIVONIA, Mich., Sept. 13, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A123 Systems (Nasdaq:AONE), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphatelithium ion batteries and systems, today announced the grand opening of the largest lithium ion automotive battery production facility in North America, based on available data. The new plant in Livonia, Mich. is expected to expand A123’s manufacturing capabilities by up to 600MW hours per year when fully operational, contributing to the company’s plan to expand global final cell assembly capacity to more than 760MW hours annually by the end of 2011. A123 Systems Signs Battery System Supply Agreement With Navistar

WATERTOWN, Mass., June 7, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A123 Systems (Nasdaq:AONE), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate™ lithium ion batteries and systems, today announced a production agreement with Navistar, Inc., a proven leader in worldwide commercial transportation, to supply lithium ion battery systems for electric vehicles (EVs) for the Navistar-Modec EV Alliance, LLC, a joint venture between Navistar and Modec Limited of the U.K.

According to the supply agreement, which builds upon an earlier development agreement that was announced in March 2010, A123 will manufacture battery systems for Navistar‘s eStar electric delivery vehicle at its Livonia, Michigan facility. A number of vehicles have already been shipped to Federal Express as part of the earlier development agreement. The work is partially funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding, administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. Tesla Motors Announces Factory in Northern California

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Tesla Motors has purchased the former NUMMI factory in Fremont, California, where it will build the Model S sedan and future Tesla vehicles. As recently as April of 2010, the NUMMI factory was used by Toyota to produce the Corolla and Tacoma vehicles using the industry-leading Toyota production system. It is one of the largest, most advanced and cleanest automotive production plants in the world.

It is capable of producing half a million vehicles per year or approximately 1 percent of total worldwide car production. The award-winning plant was the first in North America to demonstrate Toyota Production System, a widely copied system that lead to dramatic quality improvements and unprecedented manufacturing flexibility and worker satisfaction. Tesla Files S-1 Registration Statement for Initial Public Offering

PALO ALTO, CA. – Tesla Motors, Inc. today announced that it has filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its common stock. Tesla Motors designs, manufactures and sells high-performance fully electric vehicles and advanced electric vehicle powertrain components. The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have not yet been determined.

Goldman, Sachs & Co., Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan and Deutsche Bank Securities are acting as the joint book-running managers for the offering.

Zap to make electric sedan based on its sports car

Electric-vehicle maker Zap says it will come out with an electric car that will go about 100 miles on a charge but cost only $30,000, a combination of features that so far hasn’t been achieved.

Whether Zap will succeed is an open question.

According to the company, the sedan will be a derivative of the Zap-X, a sport SUV scheduled to hit the market toward the end of 2008. Washington – 19 June 2007 – In January of 2007, General Motors (GM) unveiled a concept car powered solely by electricity. The Chevrolet Volt is a big step beyond today’s hybrid, that uses both a gasoline engine and electric motor. VOA’s John Birchard reports on the progress GM is making toward turning the Volt from an attractive idea into a production vehicle.

As vice president of research and development and strategic planning for General Motors, Larry Burns is responsible for the company’s efforts to reinvent the automobile, so to speak – to move beyond conventional gasoline-powered vehicles to environmentally sound “green” cars of tomorrow.
